Rewriting the Success Story: A Guide for (Neuro)Divergent Minds

Neurodivergent? Fighting yourself will take you a ton of energy and - we promise - won't get you anywhere.

So, let’s talk about that buzzword “neurodivergent.” Neurodivergence includes ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and more. But think of it less as a diagnosis and more as a different way of experiencing the world. A world that, quite frankly, could use some different perspectives.

Neurodivergence is everywhere lately, and for good reason. Some may say it’s a hype, but it’s anything but. It’s just that we’re discovering not everyone’s brain runs the same operating system. And you know what? That’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

Signs you’re an unconventional thinker

Ever notice your mind dancing to its own rhythm? Do you see connections where others see chaos, who dreaming up solutions that make people go “wait, what?” and then “wow!” or being able to research them endlessly? Most of us have to work hard in traditional systems, but put us in our own element? Pure magic. Our creativity isn’t just thinking outside the box – it’s forgetting the box existed in the first place.

Societal norms & being neurodivergent

Let’s be real – society’s “normal” can feel like a too-tight sweater that someone else picked out. If you’re neurodivergent, the beaten path and society’s expectations can be exhausting. It’s like being a Mac in a PC world – perfectly capable, just running on a different system. But when society starts embracing different operating systems, everyone gets an upgrade.

Let’s challenge tradition!

Quick question: Who decided success meant a corner office and a fancy title, a house in the suburbs and a marriage with your high school sweetheart? No, don’t get us wrong – all of this may make you deeply happy. The only question is – does it make you happy because it’s what you’re supposed to do, or is it truly right for you? When you’re neurodivergent, doing things just because ‘that’s the way they’re done’ is about as comfortable as wearing someone else’s shoes. You may be able to function and others may even say you look like you’re enjoying yourself, but you know it’s not truly your fit.

The Secret Sauce: creativity and innovation

Here’s where our neurodivergent minds really shine: the full spectrum of creativity. Don’t mistake creativity for being artistic: it’s not just about making pretty pictures – it’s about seeing patterns others miss, solving problems others didn’t even notice, and dreaming up solutions that change the game entirely. In a world that’s increasingly complex, being able to think differently isn’t just an asset – it’s a superpower.

Finding ways to be creative – whether it’s in your job, the way you organize your home, or your passion projects (yes, even if you have a dozen a week) is a sure way to help you find your flow.

Embracing different paths to success

Success for neurodivergents is a bit like a garden with countless paths, each leading to something beautiful. Maybe your path involves taking the scenic route. Or creating something entirely new. Or maybe, it’s playing with thorns (do be careful ;)) and finding your way through dense foliage, not just because it’s the fastest route to get somewhere, but because it’s the most fun one. Whichever direction you choose, being neurodivergent likely means you’ll have to forge your own path, not just follow the beaten path.

Know yourself, love yourself

One of the most important parts of finding your brand of success when you’re an unconventional thinker is to find out what works for you. Even if this same thing may not work for everyone else you know. Some things will come naturally, like breathing. Others might feel like trying to teach a fish to climb a tree. That’s okay. It’s trial and error, but knowing your strengths and weaknesses and loving yourself without trying to be someone you’re not is your first step to success that’s right for you. To stay with the computer analogy – know your operating system and run it proudly.

Dealing with neurodivergent stigma

Let’s address the elephant in the room: society hasn’t always been kind to different ways of thinking. We’ve been shamed. Led to believe something is wrong with us. Many of us neurodivergent minds carry around outdated beliefs. Do you ever find yourself feeling ashamed or even blaming yourself for not being ‘like everyone else’? Why can’t you just [get off the couch / be happy in your office job / settle down / …]? Fighting yourself will take you a ton of energy and – promise! – won’t get you anywhere. That doesn’t mean you can’t grow, but real growth fits who you are at your core. So those limiting beliefs that hurt you? They’re like old apps we need to uninstall. Time to hit delete. Your different isn’t deficient – it’s deliberate.

Finding your people

Imagine being surrounded by those who truly get you. Who support you. Who relate. Your own tech support team, but for life (sorry, we’ll stop with the IT analogies). How would you feel (or – if you’re already lucky enough to have them – how do you feel) when you know it’s 100% okay to be you? Whether it’s friends, family, or an online group, being surrounded by people who understand your quirks and celebrate your wins can make all the difference.

Our environments matter

In school and at work

Imagine if workplaces and schools were designed for all types of minds, not just the “standard model.” We’re talking flexible hours for when your focus hits its peak. Quiet spaces for when the world gets too loud. Different ways to learn, share, and create. It’s not about special treatment – it’s about equal opportunity to thrive. You’d be surprised, but slowly – workplaces and schools are starting to catch on. That’s why it’s so important to know what makes you thrive – so you can find the environment that’s your perfect fit.

We need each other

In the end, different brain wirings need each other to function. We need people who can come up with brilliant solutions, create perfect plans to put these dreams into practice, dive deep into the details so everything works, support and take care of others while they lose themselves in their minds, and much more. When you mix different brains, that’s where the magic happens.

Let’s start with empathy

When you have a certain way of thinking, it may be quite a challenge to understand others’ minds work differently. That’s where empathy comes in. Empathy means you don’t just tolerate the fact that others don’t get you, but truly try to understand them.

When it comes to embracing different brain wirings and neurodiversity, empathy means several things:

  1. Understand that the current systems are designed for one type of brain wiring and don’t work for everyone
  2. Patience! Understanding that we all come from different perspectives
  3. Listening. Closely. And, asking the right questions.

Neurodivergent success stories

Let’s be honest – being neurodivergent isn’t always easy. Especially if you are raised to believe you don’t measure up. But you don’t have to do things the way others do them. Here’s what happens when you don’t…

Jamie* didn’t believe in formal education. Instead, he went on to quit high school and become an entrepreneur. He’s launched multiple start-ups, worked in a whole bunch of different fields, and traveled all over the world to make it happen. Today’s, he’s scaling his latest initiative. One that disrupts the playing field. Of course, it does.

Alex was born into a cult and stuck around until their early thirties. Their logical way of thinking made them question what was going on around them. They’ve never been a rebel, but being unable to comfortably ‘just do what they were told’ turned out to be their key to freedom. These days, they’re proudly queer and thriving in a community they chose for themselves.

Meanwhile, Marianna did just fine in school and later in work. She didn’t quite fit in, but she worked hard enough to make it work. In her late twenties, she started questioning whether there was more to life than this. She said goodbye to her well-organized life and never looked back. These days, she’s the proud founder of Odder Being 🙂

Tools and strategies to redefine neurodivergent success

Set goals that work for you

Forget one-size-fits-all planning tools. Your brain deserves better than that. Your goals should match your rhythm, your energy, your way of moving through the world. Are they different from others’? Good. They should be. If you don’t quite know how to figure out your goals, check out our Vision Cards. We got you covered with the right questions, you have the right answers.

Focus on your strengths

That intense focus that makes small talk challenging? Perfect for deep work. The sensitivity that makes some environments overwhelming? Excellent for picking up subtle details others miss. It’s not about fixing your differences – it’s about leveraging them. Ask yourself what’s something you’ve always seen as a challenge. What’s on the other side of the challenge, the super power you could use if you had the right context?

Find neurodivergent mentors and role models

Find those who you look up to. Being unique means you don’t get to follow their journey, but they can still inspire you. Show you what’s possible. Or spark new ideas. Use them to translate your different into your advantage

What’s next?

The future isn’t about fitting in – it’s about standing out. As the world gets more complex, we need different kinds of minds more than ever. We need your mind. Technology, creative industries, entrepreneurship – these fields are crying out for people who think differently. As more and more routine tasks are outsourced to AI, your unique way of seeing the world is a hot commodity.

We’re witnessing a shift. Success is being redefined, not as a single path but as many. Different ways of thinking, learning, and achieving are finally being recognized for what they are – essential to human progress.

Ready to rewrite the rules of success for yourself? At Odder Being, we believe in creating tools that work with your brain, not against it. From Vision Cards that help you map your unique path to conversation tools that make connection easier, we’re here to support your journey.

Because success shouldn’t mean changing who you are. It should mean becoming more of who you already are. And because normal was never really your style.
