Must-Reads for Beginners
Whenever people start out in polyamory, there are invariably two resources they are linked to.
- The Most Skipped Step in Opening Up talks about becoming your own person before dating other people.
- The website Unicorns ‘R Us describes the problems and challenges with so-called Unicorn Hunting, couples looking for a third (usually a bisexual woman) to join them.
- We’d like to add a third, less-known article: The Tower and the Village by Eve Rickert describes how seemingly valid reasons can be used to obscure underlying issues in an attempt to control other people.
Polyamory Books
Books are a great resource if you’re looking for in-depth information, whether on a specific topic or Many of these books are also available as a digital edition or audio book!
- The Ethical Slut by Janet W. Hardy is essentially a guide into non-monogamy. It explores how you can have multiple intimate relationships at the same time. Ethically.
- The Jealousy Workbook by Kathy Labriola. Jealousy is probably the most anticipated challenge of non-monogamy. In this workbook, you tackle your jealousy before it tackles you. Practical exercises all the way!
- PolySecure by Jessica Fern. Ever heard of attachment theory? This theory states that dynamics from early on in our lives determine our relationships later. PolySecure plots the attachment theory onto polyam relationships.
- PolyWise by Jessica Fern. Want to go beyond attachment styles? PolyWise is more of a polyamory guide, with a strong emphasis on personal growth.
- The Anxious Person’s Guide to Non-Monogamy by Lola Phoenix. Just because you’re non-monogamous, doesn’t mean you can’t be anxious. And just because you’re anxious, doesn’t mean you’re bad at polyamory. This book will help you address anxiety in your relationships.
- More Than Two (2nd Edition) by Eve Rickert & Andrea Zanin – Although this book was one of the best-known in the world of polyamory, it was also subject to a lot of controversy (especially as one of its authors, Franklin Veaux, was accused of abuse). However, in 2024 a new edition came out, written solely by Eve Rickert (whose article we also shared in our must-reads) and a new co-author. For one, this new edition tackles heteronormativity, so check it out!

Polyamory Communities
Looking for others to share your experiences or ask for advice?
- /r/Polyamory (Reddit group) One of the biggest polyamory communities online. Since it’s reddit, it’s easier to be anonymous. However, many people have reported being censored by moderators. The anonymity also means it’s easier for people to say things they probably wouldn’t say in your face.
- /r/NonMonogamy (Reddit group) Another Reddit group. This one is open to all open relationship styles, whether love is involved or not.
- /r/polyfamilies (Reddit group) And yet another Reddit group. It’s focused specifically on long-term commitments and generally is a bit more gentle.
- Polyamory Discussion (Facebook Group) Probably the best place to ask for Polyamory advice (aside from qualified therapists and your own heart). Questions can be asked anonymously and there are several active and committed members who are ready to offer a variety of perspectives.
- Polyamory Memes (Facebook Group) is less about the serious side of polyamory and more about FUN!
- Sounds Like Accidental Polyamory (Facebook Group) isn’t a polyamory group per se, but is a great place to spot things that could totally be polyamory.
(To submit a resource in this category, the group/community needs to have at least 1000 members and have at least 10 non-admin posts in the last week)
Polyamory Dating Apps
Looking for new connections?
- OKCupid is one of the most popular dating sites/apps for people looking for a serious commitment. While it’s not polyamory-only it’s very popular with non-monogamous and queer folks. You also get match suggestions based by your answers to various questions.
- Feeld positions itself as “the dating app for open-minded individuals”. In practice, this means you’ll find a lot of people interested in kink. You’ll also find a lot of “package deal” man-woman couples looking for a bisexual woman to join them.
- #Open is a dating app focused specifically on non-monogamy. It’s an app that tried to represent modern dating – with the full spectrum of identities & sexual preferences.
- Hiki is a dating & friendship app for neurodivergent folks (autistic, ADHD, etc.) with channels on different interests (and guess what – one is polyamory). Now there’s a huge overlap between neurodivergence and polyamory (for multiple reasons, but more on that in our blog), so Hiki might just be the place for you!
